Restroom Cross-Pollination

Chris Garlasco, Owner & Managing Partner - Founders Insurance Group

Every once in a while as business partners we run across an issue that falls into the “you got to be kidding me” category. Over the past couple of months, we have had a problem with our restrooms. It seems that it all started when in a moment of desperation and or more likely impatience, one of the partners elected to use the lady’s room. Since this partner is affiliated, although some may say loosely, with the male species, the flood gates, (excuse the pun!) had been officially opened! Rather than the expected outcry of our female staff, they took it as a moment of precedence and went on the offensive.

From that day forward, women could be seen invading what some may call the last

Will the bosses be given their own private "facilities"?

remaining male stronghold found under one roof, often times leaving the seat down! Soon the men retaliated and now no one is quite sure which gender actually was responsible for the Great Bathroom or, unless you’re in Canada, Washroom War. Revisionist history is abounding.

As the barer of the “short straw” I was elected to extend a firm olive branch asking each gender to return to their respective receptacles. Some of the early email responses are leading me to believe that this may be a “shaky peace” at best. I have had threats to continue this porcelain dispute regardless of the truce. I have had

requests to have porta potties brought in to our back lot to support the plus 50 age group. I rejected this idea outright and I am hoping that this will not warrant a visit from the AARP lobby. I have even considered posting photo’s of Gandhi and John Lennon in each restroom in hopes of extending good will across the gender battle lines.

Every office has its politics and we are no exception. We all look to the day when peace again reigns supreme!

Unisex restrooms have been explored on several TV shows. LA Law and Ally McBeal to name two. I was the only female officer at a small insurance company in the late 1970s. I always felt like I missed out on important conversations by not being able to go to the men’s room with my peers. Thanks for sharing.
