The Who?

Earlier this month, American’s in record numbers gathered around their televisions with friends and family to watch the Saints and Colts slug it out in Super Bowl XLIV. My wife Sora and I joined our good friends for a Super Bowl party. As half time drew near, Michael, the twenty six year old son of our hosts asked those of us seated around the television about the rock band, “The Who.” Michael is a pretty worldly, well read guy. He went to college in Manhattan and is now an “on air” reporter for a television station in Louisiana, yet he really didn’t know anything about The Who. Are you kidding? Pete Townsend, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon and John Entwistle! One of the most famous rock bands in the history of music, members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Woodstock alumni, creators of the rock opera Tommy that played on both the silver screen and Broadway! My wife finally mentioned, “You know Michael, the song at the beginning of CSI.” That rang the bell with Michael. “Oh…that Who!”

In defense of Michael, The Who had big hits in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Their dominate reign on the billboard charts was coming to an end as Michael was coming to a beginning. Since The Who were part of the fabric of my youth, my young adulthood and now my mid life, I thought they were eternal, not a moment in time, albeit it a great moment.

This story is a reminder to me that we often can get caught up in our success’ and not realize that as time marches on, things are always changing. Our business, our clients and the marketplace are always in motion. It’s important to enjoy the glow of our historic success as it reminds us of our roots, but that glow will not sustain us as we look to create new heights of success. Our clients may not always see us as we once saw ourselves. We have to look forward and embrace the change while looking for our opportunities to glow brighter than ever before.

Thanks Michael and long live The Who!

Have a great day!
