The Power of Potter

July 14, 2011

Cindy Donaldson, Director of Marketing & Personal Lines Sales - Founders Insurance Group

The opening of the final chapter in the Harry Potter movie series is tonight at midnight. My daughter has been to every one of the midnight showings, she also waited in line at bookstores dressed up as various characters to get the books as they were released. She is going again tonight, and she is 22.

So what is the Power of Potter – how does one create that brand existence that people just can’t resist? It is magical and the secret is……. J.K. Rowling had a passion, a strong belief and desire to share the world of Harry Potter, his struggles and his triumphs. She didn’t wane when she was down and out, hitting rock bottom, having no money to support herself – she wrote, and wrote and wrote.

That’s the Power of Potter – it isn’t necessarily the character but it’s the woman behind the character. J.K. Rowling believed enough in herself to pursue her passion, to not give up and to persevere the many hardships along the way.

You may have a great idea, but unless you have the passion to persevere you shouldn’t own a business. You may be a great people person but unless you can handle rejection upon rejection you shouldn’t be a salesperson. You may like to be in charge but unless you can lead and nurture your team to greatness you shouldn’t be in a position of power. Just a few thoughts to ponder.

I don’t know about you but I think there should be a prequel series for Harry – I want to see Lily and James, Dumbledore, Snape and the rest of the gang pre-Harry – don’t you?

Take a lesson from J.K. – follow your dreams and you too will find the magic and the Power of Potter.

Cheers from Hogwarts!

p.s. my favorite charachter is Snape – who’s yours?
