Should you insure your motorcycle over the winter?

Winter is on its way! Fall may have just begun, but I’ve definitely taken my coat (and my skis)  out of storage. Before you know it there will be snow on the ground so don’t let it catch you off guard. For now you can get in a couple more nice days on your motorcycle, but this is also the time for you to be planning ahead.

So what about insurance coverage for my bike in the winter?  Here’s the scoop:

 Comprehensive ONLY Insurance

Traditionally, comprehensive coverage has been the most popular way to insure your motorcycle over the winter months. This type of insurance protects your bike from many different hazards such as weather, theft, or fire. It doesn’t cover collision OR liability. So taking it out for a quick spin with only this coverage isn’t smart.  If you really just park Sally in the garage over the winter and don’t bring her out until spring, this may be a great option!  Not all carriers allow this – so just give us a call and we can check into it for you!

Review your current policy

Your insurance company may not offer storage insurance if the layoff is built into the premium. This may give you somemotorcycle benefits, but during the winter months it can be a more expensive option. Still, a built in layup rate is ultimately and most likely the best overall deal for you and it guarantees your motorcycle will be ready to ride all year around. In the end, this is a great option, especially if you’re set on riding that bike up to the very last second!

How about Canceling my Policy?  STOP!

We don’t recommend this at all – it simply isn’t worth the risk!  It means keeping your bike in a very secure location when there isn’t coverage; for instance, if your motorcycle were to fall over on someone and injure them, you would be held liable for it. It’s risky to add and remove coverage because you may end up not having coverage when you need it. As they say, better safe than sorry.

In the end – we suggest you keep the same coverages year round.  Accidents happen, and they sometimes happen when people forget to reinstate their motorcycle coverage they decided to cancel for the winter!  The few dollars saved isn’t worth the risk!
